About Fireproof Children

Since 1982, Fireproof Children Company has conducted extensive research into juvenile firesetting. They provide training and educational materials on juvenile firesetting to fire departments, schools, daycare centers and community agencies nationwide. In 1997, the company received the Rolf H. Jensen Partners in Public Education Award from the National Fire Protection Association for "distinguished leadership and dedication to fire and life safety through collaborative public education efforts."

Our research has been presented at national organizations including:

  • U.S. Fire Administration
  • National Head Start Association
  • American Psychological Association
  • Society for Research and Child Development
  • National Fire Protection Association
  • Fire Department Instructors Conference
  • National Safety Council
  • National Safe Kids Campaign and American Public Health Association

Our articles have appeared or been accepted for publication in Young Children (National Association for the Education of Young Children), Firehouse Magazine and Children and Families (National Head Start Association).

In 1999, Fireproof Children received a grant from the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) to review the current understanding of the home factors contributing to juvenile firesetting, identify currently available social service resources needed to address this problem, and make recommendations to NASFM and to the Department of Justice.

In 2002, Fireproof Children was selected by NASFM to provide a series of juvenile firesetting prevention and intervention workshops to help communities across the country address juvenile firesetting through better understanding of the problem and better coordination of existing services. The workshop is based on a team concept, mobilizing several community disciplines including fire investigation/fire prevention, juvenile justice, mental health, education and social services. By the end of 2003 this workshop will have been presented in 18 states.

With the City of Rochester, Fireproof Children also received three grants from the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control (NYSOFPC) to conduct in-depth studies of juvenile firesetting. These studies led to publication of the Fireproof Children Education Kit, the Firefighter's Complete Juvenile Firesetter Handbook, and the Juvenile Firesetting Video Guide to Intervention and Prevention. Working with the Rochester Fire Department's juvenile firesetter program, they were able to reduce recidivism in Rochester, NY by 74% over five years.

Fireproof Children helped develop and now provides training in BIC Corporation's preschool fire safety education program, play safe! be safe!®, which received the Director's Choice Award for Best Curriculum from Early Childhood News. The play safe! be safe! curriculum is taught in workshops throughout the United States and Canada, and more than 50,000 kits have been distributed worldwide, from Denmark to Zaire. The multi-media kit includes a video, story/flash cards, activity boards, Keep Away!® card game and teacher resource book.

In 2003, Fireproof Children received a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide training in fire safety education for Head Start programs in states with high rates of fire-related deaths and injuries for children. The Prevention First, Fire Safety Education Program for Preschool Children & Families was developed and the curriculum, based on the play safe! be safe! program, addresses effective methods of teaching fire prevention and safety to preschool children and their families.

Fireproof Children Company also offers many additional training programs for fire service and community organizations concerned about juvenile fire safety and injury prevention. They offer a variety of training formats ranging from 90-minute lectures to 2-day workshops.
